KINGMAN, Ariz. — A familiar piece of downtown Kingman public art was damaged after police say a pickup truck struck the decorative chuckwalla sculpture near the railroad tracks on Sept. 11.

The 1,800-pound concrete chuckwalla had been perched downtown for about eight years. The sculpture was commissioned by the City of Kingman as an arts project.

According to the Kingman Police Department, the sculpture was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. Police identified the driver as Mike Graham, 56, who allegedly left the scene following the incident.

KPD later cited Graham in connection with the vandalism after locating him during an unrelated police chase.

A Question for the Community

The incident raises a broader question: When will the community become fed up with people running from police and potentially putting our neighborhoods and families at risk?

Kingman residents have seen several police pursuits make headlines in recent months. In some cases, family members or acquaintances of individuals involved have publicly questioned why their loved one ran or suggested there was no reason for the pursuit. But police investigations can reveal circumstances and details that aren’t immediately known to the public.

Whatever the reason, fleeing from law enforcement can turn an encounter into a dangerous situation for officers, other motorists and families simply trying to get home safely.

On Saturday, Sept. 19th at approximately 10 pm, KPD officers arrested Michael Gene Graham, 56, of Kingman, on felony charges of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer x2, Aggravated Assault with a Dangerous Instrument, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Damage, Unlawful Flight, and Reckless Driving

And in this unusual case, there’s an ironic ending:

The “scaredy lizard” runs again — after allegedly taking out a 1,800-pound concrete lizard.
