ARIZONA — Local news plays an important role in keeping communities informed about what is happening around them. From public safety alerts and elections to city council decisions, road closures, schools, local businesses and community events, residents depend on reliable information to understand what is happening in their own backyard.

But increasingly, readers can click on a local news story only to be met with a message asking them to subscribe before they can continue reading.

That raises an important question:

Should essential Arizona news be hidden behind a paywall?

At The Mohave Insider, we believe news is essential for communities to stay informed and stay involved.

Residents Should Be Able to Access Information That Affects Them

When government officials make decisions, residents should be able to understand those decisions.

When there is a major public safety incident, people should be able to find information.

When an election is approaching, voters should have access to information about candidates, ballot measures and issues affecting their communities.

When roads close, fires threaten neighborhoods or emergency information is released, residents should not have to decide whether they can afford a subscription before learning what is happening.

Access to basic local information helps people participate in their communities.

Local Journalism Still Costs Money

There is another side to the issue.

Journalism is not free to produce.

Reporters need equipment, websites cost money to operate, public records can carry fees, travel costs add up, and covering meetings, interviews and breaking news takes time.

Local publications need sustainable ways to pay those expenses.

Subscriptions and paywalls are one way news organizations generate revenue. Advertising, sponsorships, memberships, donations and other forms of community support are additional options.

We understand why news organizations need revenue.

The question is where the line should be drawn.

Essential Information Should Remain Accessible

At The Mohave Insider, we believe there is a difference between asking readers to support local journalism and preventing them from accessing information they may need.

Some publications may choose to charge for exclusive features, specialty content or premium services.

But information involving public safety, government accountability, elections and major community issues should be accessible to the public whenever possible.

A resident should not have to pay simply to understand what their city council voted on.

A voter should not have to subscribe just to learn about an election affecting their community.

And someone searching for information during an emergency should not run into a paywall before reaching the information they need.

Free News Does Not Mean Journalism Has No Value

Keeping news accessible does not mean journalism has no value.

In fact, it means the opposite.

Strong local journalism requires community support.

Readers can support independent journalism by sharing articles, following local publications, subscribing to newsletters, supporting advertisers, becoming sponsors or voluntarily contributing to publications they trust.

That allows readers who are able and willing to support local journalism to do so without completely shutting information away from residents who cannot.

An Informed Community Is an Involved Community

Arizona communities work best when residents know what is happening.

People cannot participate in government meetings they never hear about.

They cannot make informed voting decisions if they cannot access information.

They cannot support local businesses they do not know exist.

And they cannot hold government accountable if information about public decisions is difficult to reach.

That is why The Mohave Insider believes local news should remain accessible.
